Der erste Kontakt erzählt die Geschichte vom Ursprung der Lupin-Bande. In diesem Rückblick auf vergangene Zeiten ist Lupin hinter dem kostbarsten Schatz des amerikanischen Mafiabosses Galvez her – einem Schatz in einem Schatz. Jigen ist Galvez' angeheuerter Killer, der den Meisterdieb Lupin bei seinem ersten Versuch, den Schatz zu stehlen, nicht töten kann und Rache sucht. Fujiko ist die Freundin von Lupins Rivalen Brad. Zenigata reist von Japan nach Amerika, um Fujiko zu finden und zu verhaften. Goemon sucht das allmächtige Schwert, das Stahl schneidet, Zantetsuken. Dieses Schwert ist auf mysteriöse Weise mit dem Schatz in Galvez' Tresor verbunden ... Nach einer Reihe von Wendungen und Irrungen lernen sich diese völlig Fremden bei ihrem „ersten Kontakt“ kennen – ein episches Abenteuer zusammen!
